3/23 to 4/23 Info Dump!

So in late February I found a lump in my right breast, I’ve had a benign cyst before so I didn’t think much of it but did schedule an appt with the GYN to get a prescription for a mammogram as I’m 40 and need one of those now anyway. I had the mammo and an ultrasound on 3/23 and it was suggested I biopsy the lump. On 3/31 Lumpy was biopsied and they found it to be malignant. I have since connected with the most amazing surgical oncologist at Phelps memorial in sleepy hollow, which is a breast cancer research center and my doc, Dr Keleman, is one of the very best. He and his whole staff are really awesome and I feel so well taken care of.

I had a Breast MRI on Wednesday to confirm the malignancy only exists in lumpy, there’s no other cancer markers in my right or left breast or in my lymph nodes which is super important bc that means it’s contained and a lumpectomy is all that is necessary. Doc sent the specimen from my biopsy for a genetic test called a MammaPrint- which is a genetic test to determine exactly what kind of cancer and what the possibility of recurrence is. So lumpy is Estrogen and Progesterone +, HER2 Negative (all good cause that means it’s slow growing) but is also Luminal B type meaning lumpy can return in the future. So because of this, the doctor recommends 4 weeks of radiation after surgery and he is having me consult with a hematologist to discuss hormone therapy/chemo pills/IV chemo- some kind of preventative treatment after surgery. Basically if I do one of those things, I have a 95% chance it will never return. I also have an appointment on May 5th with the fertility doctor to do an egg retrieval and freezing in the event we (my team) do decide to go ahead with one of those treatments as they will affect my eggs. The egg retrieval can be done after surgery so that will not postpone the lumpectomy. I also have to see a plastic surgeon bc lumpy is on the outer wall of my skin and when it’s removed, he will need to remove a portion of my skin so some reconstruction is required. Doc suggested I ask for a lift while they’re in there 🤣. I also did genetic testing to see if I have any genetic mutations like the BRCA gene, still waiting on those results.
