So I met with Dr Katz today, shes very nice and explained lots of things to me about the next coming months and possible treatment avenues. How things will happen going forward is I will have surgery to remove lumpy and then lumpy gets sent off for further testing. Lumpy will have an Oncotype DX test which is a unique genomic test that generates a score of 0-100 based on 21 specific genes in the tumor tissue. This will predict my response to chemotherapy as well as the chances of the cancer returning.
What does that mean? That means that based on those test results, I may NOT need chemotherapy at all. In the event I do need chemo therapy, it will be an IV drip chemo and there are 2 different regimens we will discuss and decide upon but I won’t go into that until we know if I need it at all.
Hormone Therapy- Lumpy is Hormone positive, that means my Estrogen is feeding the cancer and making it grow, and because of this, I will be put on hormone suppressants (Tamoxifen and Zoladex) to lower my estrogen production and suppress my ovaries. This may give me hot flashes and mood swings (yay). Pending the results of the Oncotype I may need to take these drugs for 3-5 years, possibly longer. This essentially may put me into Menopause early (not necessarily) but possibly.
Genetic Testing- I am still awaiting these results, apparently my saliva samples “failed” so I have to go have blood drawn tomorrow and will have to wait another 5-12 days for the genetic results again. To say I was aggravated about this would be an understatement especially considering the only reason I know this is because Dr Katz called the genetic counselor to ask WTF was taking so long. So when said Genetic Counselor called me back to reschedule and tried to tell me she didn’t have an appointment available until next week, well I’m sure you know how that went over… I am going at 9am tomorrow. To the SAME PLACE I WAS THIS MORNING! Anyway…
Upon leaving Dr Katz, I called Dr Keleman’s office and spoke with Wanda, the lovely PA and inquired as to when we can please schedule surgery. I informed Wanda I am set on doing a lumpectomy regardless of the Genetic Testing results, so she informed me that Dr Keleman will call me on Wednesday, May 4th once he returns from his sunny vaca in Spain and we will schedule surgery at that time.
So next steps are Schedule Surgery and visit the Fertility Doctor on May 5th to see about freezing my little oocytes before I begin hormone treatment and possibly chemo.
