3/12 Taxol

Friday I completed 3/12 Taxol infusions.

This drug is known for allergic reaction which I experienced last week. The nurse told me this week what you have the reaction to is the preservative in the drug, not the drug itself. So the paclitaxel is mixed with castor oil, Taxol. The reaction your body has is to the castor oil. There is a different taxane available for patients that is synthesized with alcohol and less reactive, but it’s more expensive. The insurance companies won’t approve the use of the alternate drug unless the patient “fails” (has more than 1 allergic reaction) the taxol…

Any way. The taxol is not nearly as rough on me as the AC was… Those first 4 treatments I was knocked out for the weekend. I faired well but I was sleepy, had a hard time focusing, and battled the nausea for several days. This drug has much milder side effects. I find I have energy to work and do moderate activities throughout the weekend. This weekends lesson was – MODERATE- activity. I did wayyyyy too much on Saturday because I felt great and crashed hard on Sunday. I was so exhausted I could barely move and it bled a little into Monday as well. So I just need to remind myself that while I feel ok, I am still under a rest period and not to push myself too much.

I have noticed a tingling and numbing in my left foot yesterday and today so I guess I’m experiencing a little neuropathy. It’s not so bad. I also have definitely lost a good amount of eyebrows and eyelashes. I hope to keep some the same way I did my hair but we shall see.
